3. JOB PURPOSE:
The Digital Product Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable digital products and web-based platforms that support Vital Strategies’ public health programs and the Office of Global Innovation’s digital strategy. This is an individual contributor role and will require someone who can bring technical expertise with general understanding of the social sector.
Reporting to the MD India and working in close collaboration with the Senior Digital Product Manager and cross-functional teams (including data science, design, and IT), the role translates data and AI capabilities into user-centered digital solutions for internal teams, government partners, and the public.
This is a role within the AI Innovation Hub, contributing to support multiple entities including India Office’s AI initiatives, the Brazil program portfolio and the Office of Global Innovation’s global digital products. Candidates in the Delhi/NCR region are strongly preferred. Vital’s New Delhi office operates with a full-time hybrid work schedule. We will also consider qualified candidates outside the Delhi/NCR region for a remote role.
4. Duties and Responsibilities:
(A) Software Development:
(1) In collaboration with Senior Digital Product Manager, contribute to Design, Develop, test, and maintain web applications and RESTful APIs using Python;
(2) Contribute to backend development using FastAPI (or similar frameworks such as Django or Flask) ensuring scalability, performance and security;
(3) Support the design and implementation of scalable and secure backend services in line with application security best practices;
(4) Develop and maintain frontend applications using ReactJS (or similar frameworks);
(5) Integrate frontend applications with backend APIs and data services to ensure seamless functionality;
(6) Collaborate with data science teams to translate analytical outputs into user-facing tools;
(7) Support database design, querying, and optimization using PostgreSQL;
(8) Contribute to code quality through documentation, version control, and active participation in code reviews.
(B) Digital Health and Innovation Context:
(1) Ensure digital products are designed to perform reliably on low-bandwidth and under-resourced infrastructure;
(2) Contribute to documentation accessible to both technical and non-technical stakeholders;
(3) Support user testing, iteration, and deployment of digital solutions in collaboration with product and program teams;
(4) Contribute to open-source repositories and shared codebases under the guidance of senior technical staff, adhering to established best practice and governance standards.
(C) Project Support:
(1) Support the planning, development, and deployment of digital products within the Innovation Hub;
(2) Contribute to the preparation of technical documentation, system reports, and knowledge-sharing materials;
(3) Provide ongoing maintenance and continuous improvement of APIs and processing pipelines already implemented as digital products;
(4) Contribute to strengthening institutional knowledge by documenting architecture, technical solutions, and lessons learned.
5. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Skills and Abilities:
(1) Strong proficiency in Python for backend development;
(2) Experience with backend frameworks (FastAPI, Django, or Flask);
(3) Strong proficiency in RESTful API design;
(4) Experience with PostgreSQL or relational databases;
(5) Familiarity with Git and collaborative development workflows;
(6) Knowledge of software testing principles, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing concepts;
(7) Understanding of application security principles (OWASP fundamentals);
(8) Experience with cloud platforms (AWS or Azure);
(9) Strong customer service orientation;
(10) Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams;
(11) Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders;
(12) Time Management & Organization: Manage multiple tasks and prioritize work to meet project deadlines;
(13) Adaptability & Flexibility: Ability to adjust to shifting project goals.
(14) Attention to detail actively listens, strong follow-up, focus on accuracy and thoroughness
Skills and Competencies (Preferred):
(1) Familiarity with containerization (Docker) is a plus;
(2) Experience with data visualization libraries is a plus;
(3) Familiarity with open-source practices is a plus;
(4) Familiarity with secure development practices (e.g., OWASP fundamentals) is a plus;
(5) Knowledge of responsive design and accessibility (WCAG);
(6) Experience with ReactJS or similar frontend frameworks.
Experience
Experience Required:
(1) Minimum 8 years of relevant experience;
(2) Experience in public health, government, or social impact sectors;
(3) Demonstrable experience building and deploying production-level web applications;
(4) Experience working in cross-functional teams (product, data, design).
Experience preferred:
(1) Experience handling sensitive or health-related data.
(2) Knowledge of data protection standards and best practices when handling sensitive or health-related data.
(3) Familiarity with digital health standards such as FHIR or DHIS2 etc.
(4) Experience working in distributed global teams.
(5) Experience building solutions designed for low-resource or low-connectivity environments.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirement:
(1) Ability to travel for work meetings — approximately 20% travel;
(2) Regular collaboration with distributed team members across multiple time zones;
(3) Occasional international travel may be required for team meetings or project deployments.
