1. POSITIONS VACANT: Consultant, International Not-for-Profit Organization, Remote.

2. ORGANISATIONAL BACKGROUND:

Our client is a respected international not-for-profit, that works in public health, to improve the health of disadvantaged communities, across the globe.

3. JOB DESCRIPTION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Consultant position will develop an Android SDK for Phoenix scale integration with Prasav Watch and Born Care applications. The role will manage device connectivity, weight capture, validation, errors and compatibility across supported devices. The role will support testing, deployment, documentation and technical handover to the application teams. S/he will be responsible for the following work;

Key Job Responsibilities: 

(1)  Device and Protocol Assessment;

(a) Identify and document supported Phoenix scale model(s), firmware version(s), communication interfaces and vendor protocol /commands;

(b) Validate whether connectivity is Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), USB/serial, Wi-Fi or another supported interface; no protocol shall be assumed without device/vendor validation;

(c) Document pairing/bonding, service/characteristic or serial parameters, message framing, units, stability indicator, zero/tare state, checksum/error codes and disconnect behaviour where supported;

(d) Prepare a compatibility matrix covering devices/OS versions/scale models to be supported;

(2) SDK Architecture and Public Interface;

(a) Develop a modular SDK with a stable public API that abstracts device discovery, permissions, connection, reading, disconnect, errors and diagnostics from the host app;

(b) Provide methods/events for initialize, scan/discover, select device, connect, connection status, start/read weight, stable-weight indication where supported, tare/zero where permitted, cancel, disconnect and cleanup;

(c) Expose standardized result objects containing weight value, unit, timestamp, device identifier/model, reading status/stability and error/status code as available;

(d) Ensure host applications remain responsible for beneficiary/case context; the SDK shall not independently store unnecessary personal or clinical identifiers;

(3) Device Communication and Reading Controls;

(a) Implement connection lifecycle management, timeout, retry/reconnect, duplicate callback prevention and clean resource release;

(b) Parse the Phoenix device payload and convert it into a validated standard weight value without unintended rounding or unit conversion;

(c) Provide configurable acceptable range and validation hooks to prevent obviously invalid readings; final clinical/business validation remains with the host application;

(d) Detect and report unstable/overload/underload/device-error states where the device protocol exposes them;

(e) Ensure a captured reading is associated with timestamp and device context for audit/ troubleshooting;

(4) Integration with Prasav Watch and Born Care;

(a) Integrate the SDK into agreed test branches/builds of both applications or provide integration -ready modules and support the respective app teams through integration;

(b) Enable the user to initiate device reading from the relevant birth/newborn-weight screen and populate the weight field only after an accepted SDK result;

(c) Provide clear UI states for scanning, connecting, connected, reading, stable reading, failure, retry and manual-entry fallback as approved by the product team;

(d) Do not overwrite an already-saved clinical value without explicit application Workflow /authorization; maintain source indicator (device/manual) where approved;

(e) Ensure integration does not block or crash the host app when scale is unavailable or permissions are denied;

(5) Security, Privacy and App Compliance;

(a) Request only OS permissions required for the supported connection method and versions;

(b) Avoid persistent storage of beneficiary-identifiable information inside the SDK;

(c) Protect diagnostic logs from containing sensitive case data; device identifiers may be masked if required by policy;

(d) Provide dependency inventory and ensure third-party/open-source libraries have acceptable licenses and no known unresolved critical vulnerabilities at release;

4. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:

Qualifications and Experience:

(1) Applicants must have Bachelor’s /Master’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field;
(2) Minimum 3-5 years of experience; freshers with good college or personal projects are welcome;

(3) Willingness to learn and take feedback;

Skills and Competencies:

(1) Strong expertise in Android SDK development and hardware/device integration, including Bluetooth/BLE and USB/Serial communication;

(2) Hands-on experience in device protocol analysis, API/SDK architecture, data parsing and connection lifecycle management;

(3) Strong understanding of mobile application security, privacy, permissions, error handling and diagnostic logging;

(4) Proven skills in testing, troubleshooting, application integration, UAT, deployment and stakeholder coordination;

5. CONSULTANCY FEE: The consultancy fee for two months INR 150,000/- deliverables based).

8. NATURE OF CONTRACT:

The selected candidate shall be engaged as a Consultant on the rolls of SAMS, a third-party payrolling agency, for a full-time consultancy engagement initially offered for a period of two months. The contract is extendable based on performance and project requirements. It is explicitly clarified that this consultancy engagement does not constitute a promise or guarantee of future employment, with SAMS, or our client, or any other organization associated with the project.
